Zoe Nicholson has been standing in the public square for over 65 years with one message, “WAKE UP.” As an activist, speaker and author, she has never taken her eyes off feminism and equal justice under the law. Zoe began with unions, labor, and church reform. She expanded her work to include feminism, civil rights, LGBTQ+ and peace.

Zoe holds a B.A. in Theology (Quincy University 1969), and a M.A. in Ethics (USC 1975). She taught high school for 5 years.  Zoe opened The Magic Speller Bookstore in Newport Beach, CA in 1976.  In 1982, she joined six women in a political fast for the Equal Rights Amendment.  For 37 days the women fasted on water in the Springfield, Illinois Rotunda, fasting on water which Zoe documented in her memoir The Hungry Heart ~ A Women’s Fast for Justice.

Zoe founded ERA Once and for All, Elders Rising and The Lantern Initiative.  She was a member of the National ERA Roundtable, founder of Pacific Shore NOW. Zoe is featured in the films, March On and An American Housewife, and she is also featured in the 2022 documentary about women in the workplace, Still Working 9 to 5. In 2019, Zoe organized the Long Beach Suffrage 100 to honor the Suffrage Centennial. During that time, Zoe was also successful in her campaign to establish a Long Beach Commission for Women and Girls, 2024.  Proudly, during covid, Zoe sewed over 3,000 facemasks including 1,000 ERA Masks worn by many Congressmembers.

Currently, Zoe is working on her 6th book, Tea with Alice & Me ~ Zoe’s Scrapbook of Miss Alice Paul.
